late 18th-early 19th Century ivory depicting a Rakan, or Japanese Immortal, seated,
with a wine jar. Cream to gold in color with markings and striations, minor hairlines
and engraving lending depth to a flattened triangular form. Smoothly contoured
for use, with burnishing and wear from handling over time. Exposed matte areas
of pearl gray, with sumi in the ink lines, exemplifying the tactile design in
the 18th century netsuke; simple and uncluttered, the design subordinated to the
function; typical of the earlier form of netsuke.
