Antique Ivory Netsuke
Shishi
Couching Lion Seal

Netsuke Signature: Unsigned, Circa: 18th Century
h. 1.75 in.(4.5cm), w. 1.25 in.(3cm), d. 1 in.(2.5cm)
Condition: usage worn and age cracklines

An 18th Century netsuke, cream to gold in color, worn from handling over time, the extent of surface patina and age cracks confirming that the piece was carved in the 1700’s. As well, the characterization of the lion has a style and form of the period. The piece is a seal form netsuke with one large hole beneath the lion’s belly and a ruby colored stone bead set into the head. The animal is seen in a threatening stance with glowering eyes, curling mane and upraised tail.
