Among
distinctively stylized Chinese ivory carvings, the acute realism in this beautiful
pair of elephants is rare. Judging from the naturally aged golden hue, the imperial
Qing ornaments and design on the carvings, we would tentatively estimate the date
at mid to late Qing Dynasty. In addition, the grain patterns and circular contour
of the pair indicates that they were carved around the center of the same tusk;
and because of their large size (over 10 inches trunk to trunk and back to back),
heavy weight and superb quality, we believe that the elephant pair is carved from
a tusk that exceeded 6 inches in diameter; which is likely an imported African
elephant tusk during the Qing era.
The
ivory is flawless, there is no cracks, no losses, no damages, no restorations,
and is in perfect condition. Guaranteed antique, absolutely a master-piece for
serious collectors !
