The
elephant motif, associated with wisdom and strength, is considered
the most sacred animal in Chinese Buddhism. For centuries,
elephants have remained a favorite subject of painting and
sculpture in Chinese art, where the elephant is often portrayed
as the mount for Lohans and Buddhas. As a symbol of universal
peace, pair of elephants were customery used to flank successive
Qing emperors' thones.
The
naturalistic style is well represented in this elephant pair.
Their large placid heads are lifted upright, and turned in
a forward movement which has been well caught by the acute
perception of the ivory carver, whose great virtuosity has
skillfully brought forth the weight and power in these two
elephants.
