Lacquered Antler Manju Netsuke
Seashells
Composition
Signature: unsigned, Circa: early 19th century H
0.75 in.(2cm), W 2 in.(5cm), D 1.4 in.(3.5cm)
Condition: lacquer lost, o.a. very good! This
early 19th century lacquer netsuke is a rare find. Here a cluster of intricate
seashells are gathered and arranged in a multi-dimensional composition that is
fully revealed by viewings at different angles. The lacquer process denotes a
patience in process as multiple layers are applied to create the final finished
form. Japanese records prove that lacquer has been produced for more than two
thousand years; its durability seems equal to the hardest substances, even to
works of bronze. It has been used in large constructions as well as in small works
of art. Netsukes from this period were seldom signed, the anonymous artist being
a sign of humbleness, you will not find a signature here. This netsuke has a single
himotoshi along with three openings on the side. (SD)
