This antique Japanese ivory netsuke displays organic rustic mirth. The sennin here playfully holding a three-legged-toad, cocking his head charmingly sideways in an almost possible position. His face rendered in broad strokes is nevertheless evocative. He wears a happi coat of leaves that reveals his origins as a reclusive mountain hermit. The sennin's prodigious belly (a sign of good fortune) is exposed. His two-pronged staff is irregular, a detail that communicates the sense of natural wood. On his back, the sennin carries a staff. The underside bottom of the ivory is defined by the natural aberrations of the antler. overall this netsuke is in good condition. (SD)
