Antique
Japanese Zushi shrine with twin Buddhas on either side of a devotional plaque,
carved and gilded, each Buddha before a tracery mandorla, on lotus thrones atop
an oval lotus base. Gilded interior and black lacquer finish. Although the theme
of the twin Buddhas is more common to Burma, images of twin Buddhas have been
recorded in Japan as early as the Asuka period in the latter half of the 7th Century.
The image may be understood as a prompt to remember that the twin aspects of enlightenment--the
perfect Mind of Bliss of Amida Buddha, and the worldly truth of the Buddha Dharma--are
really one and the same.
