all the Burmese tribal cultures who embraced Buddhism over the centuries adopted
the existing styles of Buddhist art from China and Thailand. The Thai influence
is clear in this piece, with its seated meditation posture and upward-turned left
palm. Bhumisparsa mudra is the one most often seen in Burmese Buddhas, and though
the cultivated influences are apparent so also is the originality and abstract
conceptualism of the tribal artist who carved this small shrine Buddha.
