Japanese Netsuke
Daikoku Cornucopia
Mask Signature: Gyokuzan. Circa: early 1900S'
h.
1.4 in.(4cm), w. 1 in.(2.5cm), d. 1 in.(2.5cm)
Condition: excellent! Smooth
and tactile to the touch, this highly polished netsuke conceived a realistic yet
whimsically charming portrait of Daikoku, the patron of farmers, the giver of
abundance. With smiling eyes, his tongue sticking out of the opened mouth baring
row of teeth like that of a toddler, Daikoku’s face is wide and expressive, his
ears are elongated and plump as befits such a deity. Ingenious in design and execution,
the carver has captured
the wholesome nature of the God of Wealth in this cornucopia shaped netsuke; which
well fits to be a thumb-puppet for laugh.
