Last BuddhaFuture Buddha
Antique Japanese Ivory Netsuke
Rakan Chinnan
Taming Dragon
Netsuke Signature: unsigned, Mid 18th Century
H 3 in.(7.5cm), W 1.5 in.(3.5cm), D 1.25 in.(3cm)
Condition: excellent!

A superb antique netsuke in fine tusk ivory, masterfully carved and expressive; tactile, with artistry in every detail. From the top of the Rakan’s head, which is marked with Schreger lines, the color deepens along the dragon’s spine to rich gold and amber, with a smooth glossy finish on all the high surfaces, the result of handling over a long period of time. The back is defined by the sinuous muscular curve of the dragon’s body, scales and spines terminating in a spiraling tail that rises to the neck of Chinnan. On the front of the carving Chinnan, with teeth bared, and the dragon, it’s nostrils flared and every whisker standing out, confront each other in mirrored fury as they engage in their immemorial encounter, the prudent sage against the unleashed might of elemental powers. Himotoshi through the arm and one hole at the back.
