A
small ornate censer with hand-chased ornamentation, finely
cast heavy trunk bearing a smoky dark bronze patina,
with usage encrustation built-up on the interior that still containing incense
ashes. This drum-shaped
tripod is standing on three flaring stilts, adorned with two wing-shaped handles
near its upper rim. The lid of the bowl is pierced in arabesques of foliate motifs,
upon which a lion-dancing shishi is hovering on three-legs. The jewel of the piece
is the protruding figures of the cowherd and ox theme, depicting the Zen parable
of spiritual evolution as outlined in Mahayana Sutra. Whereas on the opposing
wall is a large maple leaf framed by clusters of cherry blossoms carved in high
relief, which floating
above a veneer of endless knot paneling on both
side of the exterior.
