perfectly proportioned and compactly designed netsuke, this animated carving admirably
fulfills the cardinal rule of netsuke in that it is fully realized without extraneous
projections and undercutting which can weaken the material. This Shishi is highly
expressive. With its swirling and trembling forms cut with fluidity and spontaneity,
and its color which is deep gold, it resembles a large glittering amber jewel.
The roaring shishi guardian, with jaws agape and tongue visible, spiraling tail,
whiskers, eyebrows, gripping claws and upturned eyes has the qualities of an imploring
pet. |
