A
superb walrus ivory netsuke of a smiling young Sumiyoshi Otoko.
The artist signature Gyokuzan is on the reverse side in formal
kanji. Since 18th century, there were many netsukeshi by the
name Gyokuzan. Judging from the style of signature, this fine
mask netsuke can be tentatively attributed to the famous Asashi
Gyokuzan of Asakusa of Tokyo. Gyokuzan was ordained a priest,
but considered as master in carving ivory netsuke. He won
many awards. One of the prizes was awarded to him by the prince
Norihisa during Meiji. He die on August 10th, 1923 at the
age of 79 years old.
