Bestowing Gold Pieces

Recorded artist (#1955) in the "Netsuke, A Comprehensive
Study of The MT Hindson Collection" by Neil K. Davey.

Condition: age crack and small losses

A complex netsuke with many undercuts and fully rendered details on aged, cream-to-gold ivory, depicting a lavish mood and ebullient personalities. Rich in expressive subtleties requiring advanced artistry to create fully realized works in miniature.

A celebration of prosperity and abundance featuring the gods of wealth, Hotei and Daikoku, bestowing gold pieces from an overflowing basket. Daikoku, his face full of mirth, lounges buoyantly in a veritable ocean of abundance. Holding a gold piece in his right hand, he lifts his left arm to help raise the heavily laden basket. Hotei is seen in his characteristic benevolent appearance, a happy smile lighting up his face as he generously bestows his gifts. Signed in a red reserve, Rakushin.
