The
very figure of prosperous superabundance, Hotei, the happy Buddha, with his attributes
of fan, staff, and sack, wanders the countryside, dispensing gifts and riches
and caring for children. This work exhibits a high degree of artistry exemplifying
Japanese esthetics in the freshness and balance of its elements, contrasting areas
of massive volume with details that embellish and punctuate the larger forms.

The corpulent face of Hotei offers an affable smile. Tied to his upraised
staff, his full sack is almost as big as his belly. This figure is finished in
a deep red lacquer, with the robe and sack in black. The presence of Hotei in
a home is an ancient promise of abundance and well-being. Sold
