fine 19th century tsutsu pipe case of stag antler with a rich age patina ranging
from ochre to deep gold with black in the crevices. Stag antler has no covering
of keratin as is found in true horns, thus the surface varies from the burnished
amber-colored carving to the pebbled edge that is pitted but worn smooth from
handling. Along the front of the case is a fine, delicate low relief carving of
a humming bird hovering with open wings beneath a branch of pomegranates.
