carving in cream to light golden ivory, near the tusk tip, dense and solid, well
marked and showing an attractive patina of age. Skillfully carved depiction of
a rustic immortal attired in draped hat and winter robes holding a gnarled staff
in his right hand, while in his left he holds the branch of a flowering tree peony,
a sign that spring has arrived, and the reawakening of the spiritual nature of
humankind, as well as the regeneration of the natural world. Fine rendering of
the open blossom with its uncurling petals, leaves and stem.
