A
Beautiful late 19th to early 20th century Chinese ivory carving
of a dream-land in a clam shell. This charming okimono carving
depicts an intricate scenery of a peaceful country side, where

from the pagoda structure atop the lightly tapered ivory tusk,
a gradual descent of trees and rocky cliffs leads the way
to what appearers to be a man meditating besides a small temple.
Below this area, another figure sits under a large pine tree,
which strikes out from the rocky cliff hovering above a horse
rider on a bridge, where two more passers are crisscrossing
on either side. Directly below the bridge, a fisherman on
a boat is casting his net below a large willow; while one
man plays music, and another sits about on the opposite shore.
There are also houses and trees carved around the base of
the ivory in full circle. It is a well arranged composition
that leaves plenty for the eyes.
