| | A
lovely one piece manju skillfully carved to resemble the curled leaves of a chrysanthemum
(Japanese kiku). The chrysanthemum is the crest of the Japanese emperor, the oldest
continuous monarchy in the world. It is also one of the four Junzi flowers, a
Chinese term coined by Confucius, to indicate a person who is of superior ethical
quality. By itself, the chrysanthemum is a symbol of nobleness. A solid and well
made ivory netsuke, beautifully aged and smoothly rounded. Asides from a few hairline
cracks, the piece is in excellent condition.
