good size carving of a Chinese noble gently holding an elaborate butterfly themed
ornament is made from a single elephant tusk. Its flawlessly rounded contours
exude fine craftsmanship, as does its unblemished ivory finish, a testament to
purity. In tradition Chinese folklore and mythology, the butterfly is an emblem
of the soul and of womanhood. Draped in butterflies, she is epitome of womanhood,
her soul brought to life through the skill of the carver. Made in the People’s
Republic of China in the early 1900’s, this is a surprisingly solid and heavy
piece supported by an attractively carved teak wood base. In perfect condition.
