Antique
Japanese Okimono Female
Model
Posing with Flower Signature:
Unsigned, circa: late 19th century H 6 in.(15cm), W 3 in.(7.5cm), D 2.4
in.(6cm)
Condition: age cracks, o.a. good Simplicity
and natural beauty endow this antique ivory Japanese okimono. Silken in her skin,
bare except for delicately shod half-slippers, a young female model holds a single
flower blossomed with petals that might fall at any moment. Her crossed legs expressively
counter her tilted head and upward wistful gaze. Her hair is waved and loosely
coifed. The arch of her back is supple as are the curves of her rounded femininity.
She sits firmly on a barrel seat, complete with flower motif. A diamond parquet
floor is carved into the floor below her feet. The okimono shows a strong Western
influence at a time when Japan joined the European Union
during the Meiji Restoration era. The ivory has a repair to her index finger.
A few age cracks that allude to the passage of time.
