This
netsuke depicts a Rakan, one of the sixteen disciples of Buddha, cuddling a pup
while leaning against a writing table. It’s possible that this Rakan is a variation
on Hattara Sonja, who is traditionally pictured in a similar pose with a white
tiger. Regardless, the overriding picture one gets is of a Buddhist saint quelling
the wild animal with his serenity. The scene is skillfully brought to life, the
curly haired Rakan (indicating his Indian Origins) leaning back while petting
the docile puppy. The bottom of the piece displays an attractive wood motif, and
provides an interesting contrast with the rich palate of colors that cover the
upper portion. It is a piece that seems to of passed through a great many hands,
and gives off a palpable sense of history. A true antique. It is signed by Ryochika,
though no information has been found on this artist. Asides from one hairline
crack on the Rakan’s head, the piece is in excellent condition.
