Bronze
Gold Copper Vine Leaves Signature: unsigned,
Circa: 19th Century
H 1.75 in.(4.5cm), W 1.75 in.(4.5cm), D 0.5 in.(1.3cm)
Condition: Excellent! A
lovely Dharma Wheel themed netsuke, copper and gold inlays highlight the bronze
cast. Perhaps a metaphor for casting off the stagnant and repressed, the wheel
turns through the flashing vine, a sense of movement beautifully rendered through
the varied depth of the raised spokes and the shifting coils of vine. Representing
the overcoming of obstacles and illusion, the dharma wheel is a global symbol
for Buddhism and a signifier of the Eight Noblefold Path. Its circular shape represents
the perfection of dharma teaching; its hub stands for discipline; the rim, meditative
concentration; and the eight spokes are reminders of understanding, thought, speech,
action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration. The surrounding ivory
is warmly rounded and colored. In excellent condition.
