This
substantial Chinese white jade Kaun Yin anchors peace and compassion and tranquility.
Historically, the bodhisattva Kuan Yin is celebrated in various forms throughout
Tibet, China Korea and Japan. The bodhisattva is depicted in male, female and
androgynous forms. This beautifully wrought depiction of the deity communicates
both power and grace. The bodhisattva’s gaze communicates a lucid presence and
the third eye point is gracefully but prominently accented. The hair and crown
are rendered in fine detail. There is a hint of jewels and the figure is swathed
in sumptuous folds of cloth. Because it is white jade this would have been part
of a wealthy family’s home temple. This is an excellent depiction of statuary
from the Qing dynasty a substantial statue that communicates the peace and repose
of this deity. (SD)
