A
fine relief Iron plaque depicting Kannon in Tang Dynasty style, with the full
face and distinctive headdress and ornamentation of that period. Metal casting
has existed in Japan from the Nara period, but did not attain the high level of
artistry for which it is prized until the nineteenth century when makers of sword
fittings rivaled each other in technical daring and innovative design. When the
carrying of swords was prohibited, these metal artists turned to crea! ting art
works for export. This Kannon is such a piece, exhibiting great skill in low-relief
carving, a difficult sculptural form in which subtle decisions must be made regarding
the height and projection of every detail in order to create a convincing illusion
of depth in a shallow space. Here the form is mastered and captures the sense
of tranquil beauty that characterizes the subject. |
