Condition: excellent! Carved
and signed in a wavy reserve by Tokyo netsuke artist, Tomochika (I) (1800-1873),
this marvelous piece depicts Kanu, known for his immense size, calmly standing
at ready, Green Dragon Crescent Blade in one hand, while gripping his finely etched
black beard with the other. Precision detail covers this piece, from the soles
of his feet to the etchings on his robe, the figure’s poise greatly accentuated
by the clarity of minute detail. Surprisingly solid and sturdy, the ivory is lightly
patinated, without any scratch marks, chips, or noticeable wear. Overall this
piece is in excellent condition.
