Antique
Japanese Amber Inlaid Ivory Netsuke Kappa
with Gourd Riding On Toad
Netsuke
Signature: Daisu, early 1900s' H 2 in.(5cm), W 1.25 in.(3cm), D 1 in.(2.5cm) Condition:
excellent! Kappa
and toad both are mythical creatures living in water. The design of this pair
here is a popular netsuke motif. Nonetheless, the intricate details with double
coral and amber inlays indicated that this is an uncommon and collectable art
piece. This netsuke bears a scripted signature translated as Daisu. The artist
may be identified as Fujiwara Daisu Ogura; or a netsukeshi of this school. Daisu
is known for his original designs in the late Edo period, and for his work in
ivory kagamibuta and animal subject.
