Temple Lion On Large Ball Netsuke
Signature: Unsigned, 19th Century
h. 1.4 in.(3.4cm.), w. 1.6 in.(4cm.), d. 1 in.(2.5cm.)
Condition: slight worn, lost tooth Beautifully
carved 19th Century netsuke with bold delineation, compact form and classic proportions.
This netsuke exemplifies the period in its symmetrical composition and the rugged
quality of the engraved lines. The netsuke represents a temple lion with hieratic
features and rhythmic patterning. The forward mane of the beast is sectioned into
five curling masses ending in little balls, the remainder parted into petal shapes
that fold backward toward the lion’s five curling tails. The ears are laid back
against the body, the brow is deeply furrowed above the glaring eyes, flared nostrils
and bared teeth. The animal crouches over a ball, claws gripping the surface,
the fur at the elbows and feet gathering in spirals. The patina on the lion's
right side is noticeably lighter in color than the left side, where it is a pale
gold, indicating that the right side is carved closer to the center of the tusk,
where the material is lighter in color than at the outer edges. Although unsigned,
this piece demonstrates a high level of artistry which, along with its age, mark
it as a work of integrity. --R.W. |
