A 19th Century pine and ivory netsuke with Daruma accompanied by karako; the hands and face of the boy in ivory; the eyes of Daruma in ivory and black coral inlay. The Chinese boy is frequently seen with Daruma; here he points to the Great Meditator to remind us of the power of the inward journey from innocence to mature awareness. Very well carved, contrasting the smooth curves of dark red wood wood with the bright face of the karako, which is finely carved and engraved with hair lines and sumi with traces of red pigment. The boy is dressed in an embroidered jacket over which he wears his haragake bib tied at the back in a draping bow.
