No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil. This well carved Three Mystic Apes netsuke
is known as "Wrestler Netsuke" for its large size. The tactile and pleasing
design was originally conceived by the celebrated master carver Kaigyokusai Masasugu
in the 19th century. Then the motif was further populated with several versions
by the Russian jeweler Carl Faberge. The three monkeys are Mizaru, who sees no
evil by covering his eyes; Kikazaru, who hears no evil by covering his ears; and
Iwazaru, who speaks no evil by covering his mouth. With spirited artistry and
aged patina, amber inlays for the eyes, finely incised hairlines that effectively
unified the three rounded figures, the design of which is a compact and tactile
netsuke of three Mythical Apes. It is signed by Koichi, he is listed in "Netsuke.
