A
complex amalgamation of materials, symbols, and craftsmanship come together in
this lotus kagamibuta, attached via chain to a dragon themed tobacco pouch. Metaphorically,
the path of the growing lotus stands for the path of enlightenment, an open blossom
sprawled in the sun. Through the mud of materialism and the water of experience,
the lotus flower will rise eight to twelve inches above the surface of the water,
above attachment and desire. This bronze lotus flower, sitting in the center of
eight lotus leaves, is closed, symbolizing the potential for enlightenment.
The
outer casing of the kagamibuta is incredibly smooth and symmetrically rounded;
a beautiful piece of ivory. The pouch is worn but held together by silver wire,
an attractive catch stitch running along its edges. A bronze dragon buckle decorates
the front of the pouch, while the embossed leather furthers the dragon motif.
There is a thin chain attached to the pouch; a decorative dragon ojime keeping
the chain from tangling. The netsuke is in excellent condition, though the pouch
is worn.
