Maitreya,
also known as future Buddha. The stele was carved in Early 19th to 20th Century
China. He is seated with two feet firmly on the ground, an indication that he
is a Bodhisattva, who will reign over the last of three epochs. He is flanked
on the sides by two Lohan, while above his head goddesses gather. The multi-colored
granite is carved in deep relief, and is finely etched; its radiance emerging
lightly through the lotus flower halo, creating an air of divinity within the
rustic stone. The carver bringing attention to particular features of the figure
through a skilled use of depth and shadow. The
prominent head and feet are powerfully represented, well suited for the divine
minded Buddha of worldly status.
