The
Buddha Manjurshri embodies lucid wisdom and equanimity. Here, Manjushri sits royally
suspended, indeed perfectly poised upon a Snow Lion. In Tibet the Snow Lion is
revered as a celestial magical creature whose roar summons the quintessential
challenge: the call to enlightenment. This
multi-chromatic 19th century Chinese wood statue is rich with the markings of
time and veneration. Originally painted in teal, vermillion, gold and white we
now see distinct remnants of the paint on the sumptuously carved but time-weathered
wood. This is an elegant Manjushri deep in royal ease. His countenance reflects
lucidity and a fundamental well-being that remains perfectly balanced in the face
of all changes and tribulations. This statue is a deeply auspicious depiction
of the deity that evokes peace and fearlessness in the beholder. (SD)
