This
bronze guardian figure stands dynamically with feet apart, ready to confront a
challenge. His robes flow out behind him, he holds a club-like weapon and his
body is draped with whips. His aristocratic face is finely modeled and possesses
a strong authority. A classic Ming Dynasty figure with a beautiful black patina,
with green mineralization, spots of malachite on the back. The Lokapala or Four
Guardians, are the protectors of the four directions. Traditionally they are seen
at the entrances to temples as protectors of the doctrine from danger coming from
any direction. They express the fundamental power of the faith and the dedication
to protect its indomitable truth. Private Collection | |
