Antique
Japanese Carved Okimono Monkey
Rowing on Log Signature:
unsigned, Circa: 19th Century h.
2.4 in.(6cm), w. 1.5 in.(4cm), d. 1.25 in.(3cm)
Condition: very good! Exquisitely
carved monkey okimono depicts the figure rowing atop a slice of cut wood. A pleasing
brown patina traces the finely etched lines of the monkey’s fur, helping to enhance
the suggestion of movement as contour lines wrap around the twisting torso. His
face and mouth are exposed, smoothed ivory, sporting a slight frown as he pulls
his weight with life-like hands, each finger its own creation. Particularly of
note are his toes, ape-like but with skillfully rendered arches and claws. Where
he is rowing to is uncertain, though the look in his eyes speaks of determination.
Very finely rendered with startling realism. In excellent condition. Private Collection
