South
East Asian Bronze Buddha Statue Shakyamuni
Naga King Protection Indonesian,
circa: early 20th century H
8 in.(20cm), W 2.5 in.(6cm), D 2.5 in.(6cm)
Condition: minor patina, o.a. very good Four
weeks after enlightenment whlie Shakyamuni meditated on the banks of the river
Nerayjara a great storm arose. The storm would last for seven days but the Buddha
was protected: The Naga (Sanskrit: serpent) King, Mucalinda, spread his great
hood and made shelter from the storm. After the storm had passed, Mucalinda resumed
his human form, bowed, and returned to his palace. This
elegant piece from Thailand depicts this story, cast in a dark and sturdy bronze.
Shakyamuni sits in a cross-legged position, hands turned upwards in his lap. His
expression is one of bliss, attractively rendered in simplicity. The seven headed
Naga King fans out behind the Buddha while his body coils into the form a triangulated
pedestal. In very good condition.
