A
large bronze Shakyamuni, the historic Buddha in vajraparyanka posture, seated
on a separate deeply sculpted double lotus throne with flaming mandorla. The surface
of the statue was finished with a dark lacquer with transparency to reveal gleaming
bronze undertones. The Buddha’s right hand is in the mudra of Calling the Earth
to Witness his attainment, the left hand in dhyana position of meditation. His
coiled locks are painted blue; a stylized golden flame of omniscience emerges
from his head.
