Antique
Japanese Carved Netsuke
Karako
Petting Puppy
Signature: unsigned, Circa: early 19th Century H
1.5 in.(3.5cm), W 1 in.(2.5cm), D 1 in.(2.5cm)
Condition: minor chip, hairlines, o.a. very good! A
rare classic netsuke of the 1800’s; small in size, compact in design, depicting
the traditional subject of a karako, or Chinese boy, wearing his characteristic
coiffure and bib, with fine hairlines and details etched with sumi, the ivory
cream to gold in color with age patina. A very well carved piece, worn with handling
over many years, which still retains its essential expressive contours, possessing
great appeal in the good natured baby tenderly caressing his lugubrious puppy;
inlaid horn for its big dark eyes.
