Bakemono
are fantastic demons in Japanese folklore. They are transmogrified
beings distinguished from ghosts, and are not the spirits
of deceased human beings. As depicted here, an Noh actor wearing
a bakemono mask is looming over a terrified small child. As
if he is just about to do the cowering child in. With superb
scrimshaw work, carved on quality ivory, this intricately
designed netsuke is dynamic, scary and funny effectively.
