Quan Yin
Song Style Motif Chinese,
Circa: Qing, 18th-19th century
h.48.5 in.(123cm) X w.13 in.(33cm) X d.11 in.(28cm)
Condition: age cracks, paint loss, o.a. good A
large antique temple statue, well carved in multiple sections in walnut wood,
the surface replete with traces of its history; once painted, then cleaned of
its layered surface, which still clings in patches of blue, green and dark red
pigment, with lighter color in the recessions of the hair and in the folds of
the garments, the exposed wood revealing rich grain in variegated tones. The goddess’
face has endured through the several stages; clear of paint and with finely formed
features carved with sensitivity, the expression is one of serene benevolence.
The
Song dynasty ruled from 960-1279. Its founding marked the reunification of China
after a period of conflict and division. A fresh flowering of culture occurred
in which the esthetic of the Tang was revived, evident here in the elegant head
and the lyrical details of the figure, standing on a double lotus throne.
