Antique
Japanese Ivory Carving Celestial
Jester
Oni Drinking Party
Signature: Hyakumitsu, Circa: early 1900s'
H 2.5 in.(6.3cm), W 2 in.(5cm), D 1.4 in.(3.5cm)
Condition: excellent! Here
an oni (demon) and celestial jester dance and play, intoxicated from the contents
of a now overturned gourd. The oni himself is considered in Japanese lore as part
jester and part mischievous nemesis. That he plays in counterpoint to the jesture
highlights his playful side. This ivory okimono communicates whimsy and high movement.
The countenances and gestures of the pair communicate sensitivity to humor. The
ivory is finally detailed with moments of spare relief that give it breadth. Signed
at the bottom, this okimono is in excellent condition.
