scholar or night watchman stands at the base of this long and elegant column,
inviting the viewer to pick up and try the complex nine layers puzzle ball resting
in the topmost cup. Each layer of the ball is epically carved, the topmost, most
easily accessible layer decorated with a floral motif; roses budding and spreading,
connecting to each other around the surface of a sphere. The entrance holes to
the other balls loom large, revealing the many layers and their own unique geometric
patterning. Spinning around freely the balls turn inside themselves, a microcosm
of the universe beautifully held in an ivory carving.
