This
antique Chinese wooden statue is distinguished by her distinctively Han headdress
and the evocative remnants of the colorful hues of rich saffron yellow, ruby red,
jade green and pristine whites that were originally painted on the statue. As
a depiction of the popular bodhisattva Quan Yin, this statue would have been part
of a family compound’s altar and integral part of daily worship. The goddesses’
multilayered robes depict traditional dress and she stands on a graceful double
plinth. Despite the marks of time this statue conveys the essential peace and
equanimity that are hallmarks of this popular and timeless goddess of compassionate
well-being. (SD)
