An
American Buddhist acquired this heavy red stone, dense quartzite
Buddha statue from an antique dealer in Benares (Varanasi)
in the early sixties. Though the age of this Buddha carving
is unverified, the simplicity in the style of this 13" statue,
its deeply carved Aurora and robe indicate a distinctive Indian
Buddhist tradition. It is likely carved in the early 19th
century.
The
Buddha is depicted with two hands locked in deep meditation.
It has a facial breadth achieved by expansion of its round
cheekbones and a strong jaw. Some of the mystery of this Buddha
figure is derived from its radiance of spiritual energy. The
exquisite artistry revealed in its clear outlines, formal
gesture, and polished smooth surface produces a highly representational
image of the Historic Buddha.
