Shiva the Lord of the Dance, the power of the creation and destruction of universes, whirls in his never-ending alternation of activity, matted locks fanned out in the rushing movement of eternity. The god holds a drum, signifying the arousing of creation, and a flame with which to set the conflagrations of destruction. He dances atop a squirming dwarf, who symbolizes the wretchedness of human ignorance, which he easily overcomes. Judging from the incense smoke darkened surface, random patches of dark bronze patina, the radiance in this small bronze indicated that the Shiva statue was worshipped in a home shrine for an extensive period of time.
