Condition: very good Shakyamuni
(sage of the shakyas) is the name of the historic Buddha, a prince named Siddhartha
Gautama who in the 6th century 563 B.C. became the Buddha, one who has achieved
a state of perfected spiritual enlightenment.
This antique bronze shrine evokes Shakyamuni in exceptional in detail.
An ornate nimbus surrounds the Buddha indicating the luminosity of his moment
of enlightenment. Holding a lush open lotus in his left hand, the Buddha’s robes
are also decorated in a lotus motif with buds and delicate stems following the
natural flow of the cloth. The Buddha’s countenance emanates deep peace a pervading
equipoise that fills the space. A shrine such as this would have been a centerpiece
in a substantial family compound a part of the morning and evening ritual. The
slightly weathered patina expresses the passage of time and adds a gravitas to
this substantial figure. (SD)
