A
pearl gray stone carving, with burnished areas of ash white,
age patina, small chips and resulting texture and coloration of the stone over
a period of time. Stylistically this detailed carving resembles Tang style,
depicting Shakyamuni, the Historic Buddha sitting in front of a large nimbus,
and flanked by two robed bodhisattvas with lotus flowers in hands. The right hand
of the central Buddha is in a no fear gesture, and charity gesture in his left,
his vividly carved smiling face emerging from a radiant aureole. The two smaller
figures bear the resolute expressions of protectors of the light. Carved
in high relief from a single piece of stone. An
eloquent stele despite the old break, which has been carefully restored. We conservatively
dating this statue at late Qing eras.
