A stone
Shakyamuni (Gautama Buddha), Chinese made and from the early 20th century. Carved
from an unusual pinkish stone, possibly granite, its attractive grain patterns
have a distinctive appearance of the "cracked ice" look. The Buddha,
sitting in lotus position while his right hand is held in a no fear, or protection
mudra, is also backed by a well rounded and thinly carved halo. The deeply etched
geometric lines afford a graceful , but realistic detailing in the Tang Dynasty
style of carving. He sits on a solid double plinth base, lines engraved on his
open palm revealing a concentrated realism. A beautiful carving in excellent condition.
