Japanese Sagemono Netsuke Shojo
Mask
On Organic Disk Netsuke
unsigned, Circa: 19th Century
H 3.5 in.(9cm), W 2.6 in.(6.5cm), D 1 in.(2.5cm) Condition:
Minor imperfection.
Shibuichi
is a silver and copper alloy traditionally used to make ornaments for the katana
sword. This unusual netsuke is a combination of a shibuichi Noh Mask, mounted
on an original manju disk with two silver pins. The face of Shojo is realistically
rendered with a handsome face, charming smile showing two rows of fine teeth,
with meticulously incised hairlines embellishing the cross-hatching grains on
the highly polished organic disk; an excellent example of an adaptive Japanese
netsuke of the Meiji era, at a time when samurai sword was banned in 1876.
