Japanese Wood Statue Kannon
Bosatsu
Seated
in Royal Ease
Circa: Edo Era, 19th century and earlier H
3.2 in.(8cm), W 1.7 in.(4.5cm), D 1.25 in.(3cm) Condition:
worn,
o.a. good! This
noble Kannon Bosastu, the bodhisattva of noble compassion, breathes with age and
the worship of time. The wood is aged and weathered. The robes are layered with
multiple folds and the deity is delicately hooded at the crown. In her right hand
she holds a mala that is hooked over her right knee. She sits in royal ease one
leg bent up and one in half lotus. The statue fits comfortably in the palm of
the hand perhaps pointing to its past use as a gracious good luck charm and traveling
companion for long journeys. Much of the delight in the piece is in its evident
usage and worship. It is in good condition. (SD)
